Deutsche Bank developer tooling
Vice President, Enterprise Architecture · London · 2011 to 2014
Situation
25,000 technologists in 540 teams worked across four tool stacks from 17 vendors, each with its own support, contracts and way of working.
What I did
Ran software development process and tooling as a product: a €15.2M service, a team of 32 plus the 17 vendors, one roadmap and one owner. Brought the four stacks into one and onboarded 10,000 people in six months. Put every application's source code and dependencies under provenance control. Chaired the governance of the bank's ITIL processes.
Result
Output up 30%. Vendor headcount down 50%, by arbitraging quality rather than cost alone. One toolchain, one process, one set of contracts.
What it took
Treating 25,000 engineers as customers. They adopt a tool when it makes their day easier, not when a memo tells them to.
